Instead, Xiao Qiao takes half a step closer. "I always think of my sister in this weather." He turns to her again, a quirked brow opening up his expression.

“I want,” she mutters, the words tingling on her lips like strong, bitter wine. She hears ghostlike, from an adjacent room, the maid singing Píng'ān a Jiāngdōng lullaby. “I want to serve the country. And I never want to go to war again.”
She studies Xiǎo Qiáo from the corner of her eye, feeling strange that she cannot anticipate what her friend would say. Abruptly she feels foolish, kneeling there among all the shuāngxǐ. Marriage had been the easiest thing in the world to Xiǎo Qiáo and her elder sister, she remembers, recalling very clearly their wedding day. She’d scoffed at them then, their flushed excitement and girlish giggles. She’d thought them terribly light, airy things, daughter of a general that she was, that she still is. But since then she has also become the sister of a duke. And she no longer feels light even when she rides.

Xiao Qiao wants peace and children, and for now, she has both. Shàngxiâng wants adventure. Not war -- she’s had more than enough of death and destruction -- but she does not think she is suited to a lifetime of making tea and raising children. Neither is she beautiful the way Xiao Qiao is, long-limbed and graceful. Shàngxiâng is short and sturdy, more suited to climbing onto rooftops and knocking down horses and their wayward masters than captivating men. Her hands are calloused from wielding a sword and bow-and-arrow, and her skin browned by the sun.

“How is Meng Meng?” Shàngxiâng asks. She and Zhûgě Liàng watch Luo Yue and Ning Jing in the small pasture. It’s the foal’s first day outside and she’s testing her long legs as she scampers about under the watchful eye of her dam.
“He is in excellent health. He grows taller every day and is the colour of an orange,” says Zhûgě Liàng. He produces one such fruit from the deep pockets of his robes and hands it to her. He pulls out another orange and grins at her expression.
“Are you always so well prepared?” She digs in a fingernail under the rind and the sharp, sweet scent of citrus fills the air between them.

Why i rec this fic: Shangxiang and Xiao Qiaos relationship here is the heart for me here, and it is written wonderful.

"Good. This army relies on you to help them win tonight." Zhōu Yú smiled. "You are a very good young captain."
"Thank you," said Sūn Shàngxiāng. She meant it; she had worked hard to get here, to the point where she could stand in front of Zhōu Yú and take her commission from him. Zhōu Yú shifted his hand to grip her wrist.
"Be brave, and strong, and cautious. Live each moment expecting nothing from it." She looked up into his face and nodded, meeting his gaze with her own.
She would be everything she could tonight.
