fanvid recs - Wiseguy
Apr. 28th, 2026 09:58 amSince I've recently fallen into Wiseguy, I figured I'd start there with my fanvid recs:
Nights in White Satin by Lynn C and Tashery S (1993)
(You Don't Have To) Play Me Backwards by Gayle F &
morgandawn (1997)
Only the Good Die Young by
killabeez & Merricat (2001)
Take Me Out by
barkley &
destina (2006)
(inspired by
colls' post in
vid_bingo, I'm going to make an effort to post vid-related stuff over the next few weeks)

Apr. 28th, 2026 08:23 amI'm kinda annoyed that NCIS: Hawai'i only has season 1 on Blu-Ray (season 2 and 3 are only available on DVD for some reason).
I'm almost halfway through season three as of the other day. Unfortunately, I'm not invested in Sam's subplot and I'm annoyed that a bunch of recurring characters aren't going to get any screentime this season, going by imdb (Jane's daughter Julie, Jane's ex-husband Daniel, Jane's love interest Joe, Kai's father Wally, and Kai's friend Hina) and that Jane's son Alex only gets one scene this season.
I have a vague idea for a couple vids, but haven't gotten very far in brainstorming songs for them yet. I might end up making icons for it at some point too.

Star Wars: staring down the barrel of the hot sun by magneticwave
Apr. 28th, 2026 10:47 pmFandom: Star Wars
Characters/Pairings: Luke Skywalker/Din Djarin, Grogu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Bo-Katan Kryze, Korkie Kryze
Rating: Gen
Length: 25,754
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: magneticwave on AO3
Themes: Arranged marriage, Kidfic (has a child), AU - fork in the road, Humor
Summary: “Gone to a Child of the Watch, the Darksaber has,” Grand Master Yoda announces in his creaky little voice. “Peace, there is not, and yet peace, there must be.”
Reccer's Notes: On first glance this may not seem to fit the Arranged Marriage theme, but hear me out. In this AU the Republic won, and Luke is a renowned hero who is viewed with some misgivings by many other Jedi after gaining a reputation for (highly effective) violence in the war. Partly to get rid of Luke, he's instructed to accompany Obi-Wan on a diplomatic mission to Mandalore to investigate the fate of the Darksaber, and of course they meet Grogu. This causes a dilemma as Grogu must be trained, but he can't be separated from Din, who's struggling with having the mantle of the Mand'alor thrust upon him, and with the political factions of Mandalore. What makes this feel like an Arranged Marriage fic is the combination of a slightly disreputable hero being kind of exiled to a royal court (effectively), and machinations bringing him and the ruler together. In this case, the yentas are Obi-Wan, and, to a much greater degree, the Force. Luke's perspective is irreverent and funny - he struggles for jedi calm but just can't help being an action hero. It's beautifully written, and a great read.

Victory!
Apr. 27th, 2026 06:47 pmThe fifth StudioWorks DVD set was the charm! (Considering this one was mailed in a poly mailer with no padding, I'm a bit surprised it arrived in pretty decent shape, let alone with a disc three that plays fine.)

Apr. 27th, 2026 02:36 pmPreviously, I've had the theory that if I blogged every day of Daf Yomi I would put more pressure on myself to be consistent, and the exercise would be good for my retention. The latter is probably true, but recently the blogging hasn't seemed to help with consistency, so I didn't try to do any blogging as I studied Masechtos Zevachim and Menachos, the latter of which I am on pace to complete on Thursday. This not blogging approach seems to be working, I've been consistent with my learning since October.
Coming up next, oddly enough, is Chullin, which is placed ironically in Seder Kodashim because it covers the laws of shechittah that more or less apply equally to Kodashim and Chullin.
I learned Chullin last cycle and kept up with my blogging all the way through! So if anyone wants to refer back to all my old nonsense, they can do so. I'm fairly proud of this writing, I think it is funny and curious and smart and approaches the text with appropriate humility.

Search maintenance
Apr. 22nd, 2026 09:19 amHappy Wednesday!
I'm taking search offline sometime today to upgrade the server to a new instance type. It should be down for a day or so -- sorry for the inconvenience. If you're curious, the existing search machine is over 10 years old and was starting to accumulate a decade of cruft...!
Also, apparently these older machines cost more than twice what the newer ones cost, on top of being slower. Trying to save a bit of maintenance and cost, and hopefully a Wednesday is okay!
Edited: The other cool thing is that this also means that the search index will be effectively realtime afterwards... no more waiting a few minutes for the indexer to catch new content.
SGA: The Spare by Rachael Sabotini (wickedwords)
Apr. 22nd, 2026 06:38 pmFandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Elizabeth Weir, Teyla Emmagan, Radek Zelenka
Rating: Mature
Length: 13,319
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply
Creator Links: Rachael Sabotini on AO3
Themes: Arranged marriage, AU - royalty, Diplomatic marriage, Politics, Mutual pining
Summary: "It is your duty to the empire to marry Rodney McKay."
Reccer's Notes: This is an interesting romantic romp set in a somewhat steampunk AU where John is married off by his cousin the empress Elizabeth, to Rodney, a leader in the neighbouring nation. John is part of treaty agreements to negotiate peace. Consummating his marriage proves difficult due to Rodney being a workaholic, anxious about never having had sex with a man before, and, that common marriage of convenience trope, as John can end the marriage after a year and a day if he chooses. There are obstacles and pining and inadequate communication, but eventually John makes a place for himself in Rodney's labs, proves his loyalty, and we get the happy ending. A fun read!

Three things make a post
Apr. 20th, 2026 10:01 amStill no joy on my hunt for a functional StudioWorks Wiseguy season 1 DVD set (if disc 3 works at all, 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell' is very glitchy and 'No One Gets Out of Here Alive' refuses to play altogether).
(I'd think about asking Wahl if he has transcripts of his commentaries, but it looks like he doesn't have a website outside of Facebook and the idea of messaging him on Facebook weirds me out.)
I finished watching season 1 of NCIS: Hawai'i this weekend - I enjoyed it overall and I like that one of the season's significant subplots was Lucy and Kate's romance!
I also finally got around to making subtitles for a bunch of the fanvids I finished this year (I'd been kinda putting them off).

Teen Wolf, The Light in the Woods, by DiscontentedWinter
Apr. 17th, 2026 12:17 pmFandom: Teen Wolf
Pairings/Characters: Stiles Stilinski/Derek Hale
Rating: PG
Length: 12K for the first story; 35K for the 5 stories series
Creator Links: DiscontentedWinter on AO3
Theme: Arranged Marriage
Content Notes:
Canon-typical violence
Summary:
To honour a treaty with the people of a strange land, Derek Hale, prince of the kingdom of Triskelion, has to marry Stiles.
Reccer's Notes:
A beautifully lyric and almost mystical work about an arranged marriage between Prince Stiles and Prince Derek where they have never met before the wedding and do not speak each other's language. What could have been either slapstick or tragic turns beautiful in DiscontentedWinter's hands... she shows us the beauty in learning about others and how the power of belief can stop armies.
The additional stories expand the world-building and show how two very different peoples can learn to live together.

Apr. 17th, 2026 08:27 amDoes anyone know if there's plans for a Wiscon Vidparty this year (and what the submission deadline would be, if so)?
