Matt sighs. It’s one of those days when they can barely remembered to act like they’re not separated. When their senses don’t even seem compatible – when Fallon’s unrelenting eyesight makes Matt grind his teeth, and when Fallon can’t comprehend how the stench of Foggy’s Doritos could be giving him a headache.
It’s been a rough week.
“Just feeling distracted, Foggy” Matt says. “Don’t worry about it.”
Fallon’s ears twitch -- rather noticeably, Matt thinks in irritation. He can more or less conceal his true nature, but separated or not, Fallon is his nature, is everything inside him.
Piritta notices, of course, and will not stand for Fallon’s sudden moodiness. She noses at Darwin and Fallon until they obediently settle themselves on her paws. She nuzzles at both of the small daemons’ heads before giving them each a long, affectionate lick.
“She’s going to mess up Darwin’s feathers,” Karen says. Matt can hear the muscles contract in her face as she smiles.
“And Fallon’s fur,” Matt adds, but it’s not really a complaint. It’s no secret that Fallon loves Piritta’s attention. Fallon’s contented humming is probably audible even to Foggy and Karen’s ears.

Mariam immediately turns to Foggy to solemnly ask "Foggy uncle, is this your wife?" "He wishes, honey," Marci replies, folding herself neatly onto the floors."But why would I be?" "Because you match," comes Fae's reply, and she sits up on her knees to hold up a handful of Foggy's hair in one hand and Marci's in the other to compare." Encouraged, Mariam too leans in to tentatively touch a curl. And Marci, god bless her, looks like a completely different person as she charms Mariam into her lap, and even gets offered a crayon. Fae declares, "You look like my Barbie."
Foggy is soon discarded utterly as an unattractive and unworthy playmate as Fae decides to do Marci's hair while Mariam watches the proceedings. Marci is still held together, but in a completely different way, letting herself get carried away by enthusiasm as she helps the girls unpack her entire handbag and messily apply some of her lipstick on Foggy. She applies tiny dots of lipstick to Fae's cheeks and teaches Mariam to braid Foggy's hair. They spray themselves silly with a tiny bottle of Marci's perfume, and Foggy's apartment begins to smell like the inside of an expensive boutique.

Why I rec this fic: I like how the setting sets the stakes lower, how that, highens my escapism self care thing about reading about fictional people having a good/better live (finding coping mechanism, and having people who love them this kind of things), it is sweet and funny. (Also this remainds me of Disneys Filmore and that alone makes me smile)

“Did you just screw somebody on school grounds?” Foggy demands. Karen looks delighted, and Mr. Urich, reading a paperback in the corner, makes a noise like he’s already died several times today.
Matt pauses. It’s a very long pause, a suspiciously long pause, even.
“I bet it was what’s-her-name,” Karen says, nudging Foggy. “The future doctor.”
“Claire,” Foggy says. “Tell me it was Claire.”
“It was not Claire,” Matt says, laughing in that way that makes Foggy’s heart do funny horrible things that he still refuses to acknowledge. “Now, let me hear the final draft.”
“He just had illicit school sex and he wants to talk about the newspaper,” Foggy says, to no one in particular, standing up to give Matt his seat at the computer while Karen leans over to start the screen reader. “I’m surrounded by lunatics.”
“I know the feeling,” Mr. Urich says, darkly.
He should probably be giving them detention for most of the things they do, but Foggy’s pretty confident he won’t do anything that could cause him extra paperwork. The public school system will do that to a person.

They spend a few hours on Claire’s couch, hashing over the information he has on some corrupt city official and the best ways to legally verify it enough to publish, while Claire fixes him up and shuts down some of the most ludicrous suggestions (Matt doesn’t have a frame of reference for feasible, not overly dangerous plans, and Karen is really not all that better). After they’ve done all the can for the night and it’s been determined that Matt will be fine, he and Claire start cleaning up while Karen curls up and writes in her notebook. She’s exhausted though and ends up drifting off pretty quickly to the sound of their companionable arguing.
Karen wakes up in the morning after a rare decent night’s sleep (it was probably at most 4 hours, but there weren’t any nightmares so she’s pretty rested) underneath a slightly scratchy but warm afghan. Claire’s already up, getting ready for work and making coffee, which she offers to Karen when she sleepily pads into the kitchen.

Claire had thought that if she sat around long enough, some desperate vigilante with superpowers would show up and beg for her help. Given how her life had been going, it seemed like a reasonable assumption. But no new vigilantes appear. Maybe she’s exhausted New York’s whole supply. What’s she supposed to do? Search all the dumpsters in Manhattan? Ride the train to another troubled neighborhood and hope a superhero pops out of the woodwork?
“You know, superheroes aren’t the only people who need saving,” her mother says after Claire’s fourth day on the couch.
Claire snorts. “There’s not one hospital in New York that’ll hire me. You know that.”
Her mother just rolls her eyes and hands over her nurse’s bag. “Mrs. Llamosa’s incision isn’t healing. Why don’t you go check on her?”
The bag is heavier than it was a few days ago. Claire opens it and peers inside. “Where did you get all this?” she asks, fingering the vials of local anesthetic and antibiotics.
Her mother just shrugs. “I know people. Now go help Mrs. Llamosa.”

Karen

You know, it’s not like they’re dating, Foggy and her. They did, briefly, a weird spat of monogamy and dorm room domesticity that didn’t sit right with either of them. Now, they just mostly fuck each other and hang out and study, which is better. Feelings are messy and Marci’s not great at them—and, frankly, she doesn’t like not being great at things.

Foggy’s face splits into a slow grin. “It was a good thing you did for Karen.”
“Okay,” she says and goes back to her book. So she’s occasionally a decent human being. They don’t have to make a big deal out of it.
“You were right that something bad happened, you know. She didn’t tell me what it was, but she’s been going to the therapist.”
“Good,” Marci says. “She’s a good employee. It’s important that we take care of her.”
“You don’t have to pretend it was just a business decision,” Foggy says.
Marci glares at him over the top of New York State penal code 589-7A. “I’m not debating you about the true nature of my soul.”
Foggy claps his hands. “Excellent. That was easier than I thought. As a reward, I will not foist my companionship on you on both days of your moving adventure. I'll allow you to decide if you'd like my help packing the Manhattan apartment or unpacking in Queens.”
“Neither,” Marci says firmly. She goes back to her book and waits for Foggy to do the same. Then she shifts so that she’s facing him from the best possible angle, and okay, maybe she surreptitiously undoes a button. Then she smiles. “I could use some help saying goodbye to a certain fabulous bedroom though.”
Help a secretary, get free orgasms. It’s not a terrible deal.
